Our Story

Mark & Kate Devereux established the Children's IGAS Awareness Campaign after their son, Lex, was diagnosed with Invasive Group A Strep infection Septic Arthritis in 2016 aged 7yrs old.

Within just 5 days, Lex went from being a perfectly healthy little boy to being within 12hrs of losing his life, and ending up in intensive care. Lex also developed Pneumonia and Septicaemia. Our little boy spent 17 days in hospital undergoing 2 life saving operations and 75 IV doses of antibiotics, before going home with 6 more weeks of oral antibiotics and 18mths of physio. Yet we are the lucky ones, some children don't survive!

Having no prior knowledge or awareness of IGAS it was a very difficult and traumatic time for our family, and as a direct result of our experience we feel it is important to promote the awareness and early recognition of Invasive Group A Streptococcal infections, as well as support other families going through a similar experience.

Your story not only has the power to heal you, but it also has the power to help others. So we invite you to share your story; it could give someone strength, keep them hopeful, and even just remind them that they are not alone.

We may use your story on our website and social media channels to raise awareness. You can email our team with photographs of yourself and the person who contracted the IGAS infection.

Thanks! Message sent.
